The 72nd SBI Art Auction | Modern and Contemporary Art

SBI Art Auction is pleased to announce that the 72nd SBI Art Auction | Modern and Contemporary Art will take place on Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24, 2025. A total of 307 lots are scheduled to be offered, ranging from iconic works by internationally acclaimed artists to coveted masterpieces highly sought after by collectors. This seasonally fitting collection embodies the lightness and vividness of early summer, while also featuring works that invite moments of profound contemplation.

Among the standout works this season is OHHH..., a large-scale piece by KAWS. Globally recognized as a leading figure in contemporary art, KAWS continues to captivate audiences with his distinctive visual language. The stylized silhouette rendered in refined colors and forms creates a strong impact—made even more striking by the artwork’s substantial scale, sure to command attention in the exhibition space.

Another top highlight is Flowers by KUSAMA Yayoi, one of the two top lots of the sale with the highest estimate. This painting features a dynamic floral motif that symbolizes life force and cycles, set against a pink ground overlaid with net patterns striking embodiment of KUSAMA's iconic themes. Also not to be missed is Yellow light and white light, a 1980s abstract painting by MOTONAGA Sadamasa, known for his rhythmical, buoyant compositions. The gentle gradations and playful palette create a floating sensation unique to his style, drawn across a size 30 canvas.

Further enriching the lineup is Oglalalakota Warrior/オグラララコタ戦士/Wakinyan Flapped His Wings by OKAZAKI Kenjiro, painted in 2021. Bursts of vivid color—pink, red, orange, lime green—applied with bold brushstrokes generate a sense of energy and movement that feels perfectly in tune with the season’s vibrancy. Meanwhile, Reclining Nude by Léonard Tsuguharu FOUJITA offers a glimpse into the refined draftsmanship and international acclaim the artist built while working in France. It remains one of the most highly regarded works in the sale.

The auction also features Perennial 15.Jul by HIRAKO Yuichi, whose works are known for weaving together elements of nature, flora, and the human figure into dreamlike spaces. In this piece, birds surround a figure sitting quietly within a forest, creating an atmosphere that is both mystical and serene.

The collection is further enriched by renowned works such as Old Fashioned Vegetable, from Campbell Soup II (F. & S. Ⅱ.54) by Andy WARHOL, showcasing his legendary soup can series, and Banksquiat (Black)—a satirical homage by BANKSY featuring BASQUIAT’s signature crown motif. Rounding out this diverse offering is Potager by KONDO Aki, a joyful explosion of color that captures the artist’s unique worldview.
