[Highlight] ARAKAWA Shusaku | And / Or in Profile | MAY 2026 Modern and Contemporary Art

　Shusaku Arakawa, who moved to the United States in 1961 and thereafter based his practice in New York, gained international recognition for his striking "Diagram" series composed of elements such as words, arrows, symbols, and lines. In 1971, he published The Mechanism of Meaning, a collaborative body of work with his lifelong partner, the poet Madeline Gins, which explored the processes through which humans perceive and construct meaning.

　Created in 1974, And / Or in Profile presents a large-scale composition in which words and symbols function simultaneously as both image and text, requiring the viewer to engage in acts of both seeing and reading. The horizontally oriented composition is structured into four columns of words: the first, second, and fourth columns repeat identical terms, while the third presents their corresponding antonyms. A long, rainbow-colored line traverses the composition diagonally downward from left to right, passing beneath the word "long" and subtly shifting the rightmost column to a slightly lower position. Below this, a plinth-like line is drawn, upon which an actual level is placed. At the bottom of the composition appear two sentences: "A position of believing in what is perceived" and "A position of believing out from what is perceived." Here, the relationship between perception and cognition is called into question through the tension between "in" and "out," and between what is seen and what lies beyond it.

　The gradation of light and dark suggests a relationship between memory and forgetting, while the seemingly rational structure destabilizes as the viewer’s position shifts, causing the columns of words to appear and disappear. Through this work, Arakawa appears to suggest that meaning is not fixed but is continuously generated and transformed through the interplay between seeing and reading.

[Highlight] Léonard Tsuguharu FOUJITA | Portrait d'Hélène Franck | MARCH 2026 Modern Legacy: An Important Japanese Collection of 20th & 21st Century Masters

　The subject of this masterful portrait is Hélène Franck, the daughter of François Franck, a prominent art dealer and influential figure in the Antwerp art scene. According to the memoirs of Youki, Foujita’s companion at the time, Hélène visited the artist’s studio in early 1924 with her mother. Deeply aware of her father’s admiration for Foujita’s work, she sought to commission a portrait of herself to present to him as a birthday gift. Though she could offer only a modest sum, Foujita was moved by her youthful sincerity that he accepted the request. This gesture of goodwill by Foujita deeply impressed François Franck, who later visited the studio to provide double the original fee, marking the beginning of a profound patron-artist relationship that would endure for years.

　The composition is dominated by a striking gown of vibrant green, white, and black—a cutting-edge creation by the then-emerging couturière Jeanne Lanvin. However, beneath this surface of high-fashion elegance lies a remarkable secret. In her later years, Hélène confided to her son that the small round pochette she clutched in her left hand concealed a loaded pistol. Wary of rumors regarding Foujita’s reputation as a seducer, she prepared to safeguard herself. This internal resolve and the palpable tension of the sitting are immortalized in the work’s atmosphere, captured through the artist's characteristically sharp, meticulous line work that defines every detail of her presence.
Painted in 1924, this work represents the pinnacle of Foujita’s Parisian period. It was during this era that he established his renowned “le grand fond blanc” (milky white ground) technique—a sophisticated method involving a luminous, opalescent base that earned him widespread critical acclaim as a leading figure of the École de Paris. The interior setting reflects Foujita’s passion for antiquities; an engraving of the Gardens of Versailles, a ceramic decorative plate, and bedding adorned with 18th-century Toile de Jouy patterns—all sourced from Parisian flea markets—provide a nostalgic backdrop. This sophisticated juxtaposition of historical decor with the avant-garde modernity of the Lanvin dress offered contemporary viewers a startlingly fresh aesthetic experience.

　Upon its debut under the title Portrait d'Hélène Franck at the Contemporary Art Exhibition in Antwerp in May 1924, the critic Georges Marlier lauded the artist for transposing the charm of antique fashion engravings into the realm of high art (Sélection: Chronique de la vie artistique et littéraire, 3 année, No. 8, Antwerp, June 1924 "Sélection: Chronique de la vie artistique et littéraire" 3 année, n°8, Antwerp, June 1924 ).
After François Franck passed away, much of his collection was donated to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, this portrait remained in Hélène’s private possession as a cherished memento of her father.

　Beginning with his meteoric success in 1920s Paris, Foujita’s œuvre has undergone a re-evaluation within the 21st-century international art market, garnering renewed and intense global attention in recent years. This upward trajectory is exemplified by the 2018 sale of La fête d’anniversaire for a record-breaking £7.1 million at Bonhams London. As interest in his masterpieces continues to intensify, this portrait stands as a definitive testament to the artist’s technical brilliance and his unique position in the history of modern art.

[Highlight] Tamara DE LEMPICKA | Study for "Femmes au Bain" | MARCH 2026 Modern Legacy: An Important Japanese Collection of 20th & 21st Century Masters

　Tamara de Lempicka was born into a wealthy family in Warsaw and spent her adolescence in Russia and Switzerland. Against the backdrop of the turmoil of the Russian Revolution, she moved to Paris, where in 1920 she enrolled at the Académie Ranson, a private art school founded by artists of the Nabis group and studied under Maurice Denis (1870–1943). She subsequently attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, a private art school established in 1904 with a strong emphasis on life drawing, where she was taught by André Lhote (1885–1962), who was instrumental in the theorization and pedagogy of Cubism. Under Lhote’s guidance, Lempicka’s exposure to Cubist methods of geometrically constructing form had a profound impact on her artistic expression.
　
　As early as 1922, she participated in various Parisian salons, in particular the Salon d’Automne and the Tuileries Salon. From the outset, she focused primarily on the human figure, depicting her subjects pressed tightly into the pictorial space. Characterized by firmly modeled bodies, powerful limbs, and small, well-proportioned breasts, her expression simultaneously encompasses sensuous, elegant femininity and a Cubist-derived geometric sense of structure, gradually establishing her distinctive style.

　In 1925, a solo exhibition at the Bottega di Poesia, Milan, marked a major turning point in Lempicka’s career. The gallery director, Count Emanuele di Castelbarco―himself active as a painter, poet, publisher, and patron of the arts―recognized her talent and introduced her to Milan’s art and social circles, frequented by aristocrats, musicians, and artists. This led to a succession of portrait commissions. In 1927, she also met Dr. Pierre Boucard in Paris, a physician who had made a fortune in the pharmaceutical industry and produced portraits of his family. Building on these successes, Lempicka reached the height of her career between approximately 1928 and 1930.

　Étude pour Femmes au bain is a study for Femmes au bain (fig. 1), which depicts a group of women bathing and was executed around 1929, during Tamara de Lempicka’s so-called golden period. The composition reveals the influence of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780–1867), whom André Lhote greatly admired, and evokes Ingres’s late masterpiece The Turkish Bath (Le Bain turc) (fig. 2). Ingres’s celebrated arrangement of multiple nude figures placed in intimate proximity likely served as an important point of reference for Lempicka in addressing multi-figure compositions and varied poses. Within Lempicka’s oeuvre, which is predominantly centered on single nude figures or individual portraits, a composition featuring as many as seven nude women is exceptionally rare. Condensing her Cubist-derived geometric sensibility with depictions of women endowed with sensuality and powerful vitality, this work offers a compelling demonstration of the distinctive appeal of Lempicka’s art.

[Highlight] INOKUMA Genichiro | Map and Colors | JANUARY 2026 Modern and Contemporary Art

　Born in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture, Genichiro Inokuma was a painter whose career unfolded across multiple cultural centers. After his first acceptance into the seventh Teiten exhibition in 1926 with Portrait of a Woman, he pursued studies in Paris and later worked in New York, maintaining an active practice while relocating between Tokyo and Hawaii. Prior to his move to New York, Inokuma primarily exhibited figurative works, including female figures.
　His extended residence in New York from 1955 to 1975 proved to be a decisive turning point in the evolution of his artistic language. The city, charged with postwar vitality and the emergence of new artistic movements such as Abstract Expressionism, provided fertile ground for experimentation. Encounters with contemporaries such as Mark Rothko and Jasper Johns further stimulated his shift toward abstraction.
　Around 1962, words associated with the "city," such as City and Street, began to appear in his titles, and his canvases became filled with compact, tatami-like short strokes. Inokuma described this visual language as "Confusion and Order." To him, New York—with its grid-like streets teeming with pedestrians and cars and its buildings undergoing constant cycles of construction and demolition—appeared almost animate, a spectacle of ceaseless motion and energy. As he observed the urban landscape day by day, the seeming chaos gradually revealed a hidden structure, an underlying order he came to regard as inherently beautiful.
　Map and Colors (1964), composed of delicate pale-blue strokes that span the entire canvas, stands as a clear articulation of Inokuma’s mature approach. The work offers an abstract distillation of the city’s rhythms, density, and structural intricacies.
