Encounters with Masterpieces and Fresh Perspectives in the Deepening Autumn
SBI Art Auction is pleased to announce that “The 75th SBI Art Auction | Modern and Contemporary Art” will be held on Saturday, October 25 and Sunday, October 26, 2025.
This autumn sale, held amid the deepening season, will feature approximately 370 works ranging from established masters to emerging talents. From the groundbreaking developments of post-war Japanese art to works that reflect current international trends, the lineup offers a multifaceted view of both domestic and global art scenes.
Among the highlights, works by KUSAMA Yayoi, who continues to attract worldwide attention, will once again play a central role in the sale. The top lot, Pumpkin (Lot 070), will be joined by several small-format canvases (SM size, a Japanese standard). A soft sculpture created in the 1960s using pliable materials will also be presented, offering a rare opportunity to experience the breadth of KUSAMA’s practice, from painting to sculpture.
The selection of works by NARA Yoshitomo includes Power to the Punx (No. YNF2125) (Lot 076), along with several pieces from the 1990s. These works date from a pivotal stage in NARA’s career as he built his international reputation, allowing collectors to encounter expressions that trace back to the artist’s origins.
Among the international highlights, Andy WARHOL’s Endangered Species (1983) series stands out. This group of ten silkscreens depicts endangered animals in vivid colors and bold outlines. By presenting animals in the same style as his celebrity portraits, WARHOL underscored the importance of environmental conservation. The featured work, Pine Barrens Tree Frog, from Endangered Species (F. & S. Ⅱ.294) (Lot 107), exemplifies how he integrated social themes into the context of Pop Art.
From post-war Japanese art, Work (Lot 021) by MURAKAMI Saburo, renowned for his “Paper Tearing” works, will be offered. After co-founding Zero-kai (the Zero Society) with SHIRAGA Kazuo, TANAKA Atsuko, and KANAYAMA Akira, MURAKAMI became a central figure of the Gutai Art Association.
